WESTPORT -- Ruth Manville Walker, 90, a longtime resident of Westport, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at her home with her daughter at her side.
Mrs. Walker was born in East Hartford, Conn., Dec. 20, 1916, the daughter of E. Perry and Helen (Chaffee) Manville.
Ruthie, as she preferred to be called, was educated at Duke University where she met her beloved husband, Carlin.
She was an avid horsewoman in her younger days and she and Carly operated a riding academy at the family farm in the 1940s. Ruthie was a world traveler and made a point to learn a few words in the language of every country they visited. She loved Hawaii and beachcombing and was very knowledgeable about the shells she collected and displayed. Her spirit of adventure lasted well into her 80s, with her last exploit being a swim with the dolphins and parasailing over the Florida Keys.
Ruthie is survived by her daughters, Lynn Andre and Elizabeth Luppy of Jericho, Vt.; three grandchildren, Melissa Feik of Roanoke, Va., Dorothy Shaffer of Dallas, Texas, and David Barchagov of Montgomery Center, Vt.; and six great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husband, Carlin; her sister, Barbara; and her brother, Edward.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Westport Federated Church with Georgianna Anson, lay minister, and Steven Smith, Hospice chaplain, officiating.
