Sophia Mahler was born and raised in Mecklenburg, Germany. She married John Brusehaver here, and together they came to America in the late 1870's. They first settled in Gillford Township, Wabasha County, Minnesota.
In March 1881, during an epidemic of diphtheria, Sophia and John lost 4 of their 5 children just days after her own birthday.
They moved to West Albany Township where they purchased a 160 acre farm. John spent many years improving the farm and had profitable results. In 1903, after leasing the farm to their only surviving child, Charles F., John and Sophia moved to Lake City and lived out the remainder of their lives.
