Commander Albert Hugh Magie, Jr.

Commander Albert Hugh Magie, Jr., U.S. Navy, Retired, age 85, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Monday, October 30, 2006, at Southridge Village Retirement Center in Heber Springs. Born in England, Arkansas, on March 5, 1921, he was the son of the late Albert H. Magie, Sr. and Rose Beauchamp Magie.

Mr. Magie attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello (formerly A & M). His flight training for the United States Navy was in Pensacola, Florida. Mr. Magie was a retired Navy pilot, having served as a commander for twenty-six years. A veteran of World War II, he was the first veteran from Greers Ferry to join the V.F.W. and was also a member of the Retired Military Officers Club. He was a past member of the Rotary Club. Upon his retirement from the United States Navy, Mr. Magie worked as a real estate agent. A former resident of Pine Bluff, Mr. Magie had lived in Heber Springs since 1979 and was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jean Easterly Magie, and by two brothers, Cone Magie and Leland Beauchamp Magie.

Survivors include his wife, Grace (Ratcliff) Tilley Magie of Heber Springs, AR; one son, Richard C. Magie and wife, Frances of Bedford, New Hampshire; two daughters, Karen Sue Berry and husband, Thomas, of Pine Bluff, AR, and Nancy Jo Daniels of Little Rock, AR; three stepsons, Bryan Tilley of Heber Springs, AR, and James Tilley and William Tilley, both of Little Rock, AR; two brothers, J. J. Magie, M.D., of Morrilton, AR, and Casey Magie of Darwin, Australia; twelve grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Mr. Magie is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Graveside services with military honors will be held Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 10:00 a.m. in the Mulberry cemetery at England, Arkansas. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the VPB 121 Squadron. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in St. Francis Episcopal Church in Heber Springs. Memorials may be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church, 20 Woodland Cove, Heber Springs, or a favorite charity. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc., 601 W. Main, Heber Springs, AR 72543
