Katherine Josephine MacKay was born in Raleigh, NC 4th of 5 known children born to Joseph Jenkins MacKay of Beaufort, SC and Katherine Johnson Devereux.

On her paternal side, she was granddaughter of George Chilsolm MacKay & Abigail Martha Jenkins, wealthy planters from "Madeira" plantation in Beaufort, SC, whose fortunes were destroyed during the Civil War. On her maternal side, she was granddaughter of Major John Devereux & Margaret Lane Mordecai of "Wills Forest", Raleigh and "Runiroi" in Bertie Co, NC.

Katherine married Thomas Lenoir Gwyn/Gwynn of Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co, NC, but died in 1918 at the age of 30. Her body was returned to Raleigh for burial with her family. Her husband later remarried.
