Elizabeth T. MacCormick, 80, of Northside East Bay, formerly of Sydney, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Peg (Donovan) MacIntosh.
In her earlier years, Betty spent numerous hours at the family bungalow in Northside East Bay and at the family grocery store on Union Street, Glace Bay. After graduation from St. Ann School she entered the School of Nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital and graduated as a registered nurse. She worked with St. Joseph's Hospital, the VON and was a Nursing Sister at Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax. For Betty and Leo family was extremely important; they encouraged their children to pursue an education and appreciate the great outdoors. An avid supporter of the Cape Breton School of Crafts, Betty became an artisan. Despite raising 7 children, Betty's talents shone as a knitter and rug hooker along with numerous other crafts. Mom was thrilled to be involved in stain glass and is recognized as one of the artists for the "Tree of Hope" stain glass window proudly displayed at the McConnell Library in Sydney. Mom shared her crafts in support of many community causes.
She was a loving spouse to Dr. Leo ‘Wimpy' McCormick for 58 happy years. Also surviving are her children, Colleen (Don) Cameron, Fort McMurry, Alta., Dr. Shaun, Baddeck, Sharon (Paul) Gallop, Upper Leitches Creek, Dr. Brian (Johanna), Vankleek Hill, Ont., Liam, Prospect, Keith (Cheryl Scott-MacCormick), Antigonish, Maureen (David) Rowlands, Oakville, Ont.; 11 grandchildren, Andrew, Heather, John, Grace, Blair, Cynthia, Mathew, Sarah, Daniel, Michael and Lindsay. Also survived by sisters, Sally Mahoney, Mary MacIntosh, Anne Caudle and a sister-in-law, Gena MacIntosh.
Betty was predeceased by a brother, Angus and a sister, Helen MacAdam and Helen's husband Roddie.
Visitation for the late Mrs. MacCormick will be held on Friday, April 26 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, East Bay, with Rev. F. Abbass officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
The family truly appreciated the consistent care and compassion given by Dr. Paul Murphy over the years. A special thank you to the staff of MacDougall Court, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, for loving Mom as we did.
Donations in Betty's memory may be made to a charity of choice.
