Richard Dean Mabe, 73, Jerico Springs, died Friday, March 21, 2008, at his home in Jerico Springs of a heart attack.
He lived his early years near DeSoto, Kan., and graduated from DeSoto High School. Along with eight of his classmates, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-57. He married Joyce Dec. 23, 1956.
Always wanting to learn more, he attended junior college, data processing school, Central Technical College and one year at Kansas University. He was a KU fan from the time he was young, and stayed a fan until he died. He and his family moved to Jerico Springs in 1969, and he worked as a carpenter until he suffered a heart attack in 1984 and had to retire.
Another of his loves was the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a lifetime member of Stockton VFW post. He was baptized into Jerico Springs Christian Church in 1971.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joyce Mabe of the home; a son, Scott Mabe and wife Susan of Lamar; a daughter, Kim Jeffries of Jerico Springs; and four grandchildren, Sarah and husband Ryan of Springfield, Clay Jeffries of Lamar and Alicia Mabe and Bret Mabe of Kansas City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Susie Mabe; and a brother, Robert D. Mabe.
Services were at 2 p.m. Monday, March 24, at Jerico Springs Methodist Church, with burial in Caplinger Mills Cemetery under the direction of Long-Brumback Funeral Home.
