Claire T. Lyon of Rye, who worked in the hardware business until she was 89, died Wednesday of heart failure at United Hospital Medical Center in Port Chester. She was 94.

She was born Feb. 16, 1898, in the Bronx to William and Sarah Turnau.

She married Walter W. Lyon Feb. 16, 1923, at Little Church Around the Corner in New York City.

Mrs. Lyon had lived in Rye for 69 years. Mrs. Lyon was housewares manager for Greenwich (Conn.) Hardware for 35 years until the store closed in 1985. Mrs. Lyon then went to work for Feinsod's Hardware in Port Chester, retiring at age 89. She was honored by Greenwich as a "Nutmegger" for her 35 years of service to the town.

A 1916 graduate of Wadleigh High School in the Bronx, she was a member of Rye Presbyterian Church and served as an air raid warden during World War II.

Mrs. Lyon is survived by a brother, Theodore Turnau of Asheville, N.C.; a sister, Edna Hymas of Hallandale, Florida, three daughters, Claire Dutton of Rye, Gloria Stroetzel of Larchmont and Joan Mulligan of Cocoa, Florida; a son, Walter Lyon Jr. of Glen Rock, N.J.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Her husband died in 1968.
