John Thomas Lynn was the son of James Lynn (born in Connecticut c. 1830) and Melora [Melorah] Cook (born in New Jersey c. 1831). They married on May 9, 1853, in Warren County, Illinois.

The couple are shown in the 1870 U.S. Census living in Sherman Township, Montgomery, Iowa. At the time, John Thomas was 14 years of age.

By 1880, the family is shown living in Kiowa, Barber County, Kansas. They had to have moved after 1875, since the youngest shown in 1880 was born in Iowa.

James Lynn and Melora Cook had the following children:

John T. Lynn (age 23 in 1880, born in Illinois)

William J. Lynn (age 22 in 1880, born in Illinois)

Mary M. Lynn (age 20 in 1880, born in Iowa)

Sarah T. Lynn (age 18 in 1880, born in Iowa)

Samuel W. Lynn (age 17 in 1880, born in Iowa)

Louisa J. Lynn (age 4 in 1870, born in Iowa, listed as Laura 1880 census)

Andrew J. Lynn (age 12 in 1880, born in Iowa)

Minnie Lynn (age 9 in 1880, born in Iowa)

Cassie Lynn (age 5 in 1880, born in Iowa).

John Thomas and his wife, Clara, took in two nephews, brothers David Wright Lynn (see FG memorial 83823975) and Dewey Lynn, after their father was killed. The boys' father would have been either Samuel W. or Andrew J. since he was listed as having been born in Iowa.

The two boys are the only children listed in the home of James and Clara in the 1910 U.S. Census, River Township, Kingfisher, OK. They are shown with no children in the home in 1900 (their daughter, Iva, died in 1898).
