      F. Luken & Co. is the name of the firm that has just started in the building on Front street, occupied by H. Theviot & Co. The stock consists of general produce. Mr. Luken is well known to Brainerd people and we bespeak for him a liberal patronage. (Brainerd Dispatch, 23 January 1885, p. 3, c. 2)

      F. Luken has purchased the lot on Front street, just east of Walker's meat market, and will commence the construction of a veneered brick building at once. The building will be two stories high and about 60 or 70 feet in length. The first floor will be a large store room which Mr. Luken will occupy as soon as completed with his stock of notions and fancy articles. The construction of this building will add much to the appearance of Front Street in that locality. (Brainerd Dispatch, 12 April 1889, p. 4, c. 4)

Work has been commenced by Fred Luken on the second story to his store on Front street. (Brainerd Dispatch, 06 October 1899, p. 8, c. 1)

Luken Rites to Be Held on Saturday
_____

Charles Fredrick Luken, who opened a Brainerd business establishment in 1885 and operated it continuously until his death, passed away Wednesday afternoon in St. Joseph's hospital.
Pioneer business man of the city, Mr. Luken had been ill for some time and had been hospitalized for the past week. He was 81 years old.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the First Presbyterian church with Rev. Alexander G. Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, May 17, 1860, Mr. Luken came to America as a boy, living first in New York City. He moved to Brainerd in 1885 after spending a brief time in business at Belle Plaine, Minn.
The first Luken business establishment was on a modest scale but as the years rolled by it was enlarged to become one of Brainerd's most substantial and well known businesses. The present Luken Variety store is located at 714 Front street.
No other surviving business man has operated an establishment for a longer period of time than had Mr. Luken. He came to Brainerd when the city was less than five [sic] years old and his store grew up with the community. He remained active in its management until last May when he became too ill to work.
Duuring the first years in this city, Mr. LLuken was in partnership but before the turn of the century he became sole owner of his variety store.
Eight years after coming to Brainerd, Mr. Luken married Miss Emma C. Brown, who survives her husband. Other survivors include several nephews and nieces.
Long a member of the Presbyterian church, Mr. Luken had been a trustee for a number of years. He also belonged to the A. F. and A. M., Knights Templar and Blue Lodge; Modern Woodmen of the World and Eastern Star. The Luken's residence is at 214 1/2 South Eighth street.
Friends may call at Whitney's chapel until Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock.
Among relatives here for the funeral are Mrs. V. E. Kachelhoffer of Ackley, Iowa, and Mrs. Sarah Kirk of Bemidji, sisters of Mrs. Luken; and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Berie of Minneapolis. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 21 November 1941, p. 1)
