Wife of John William Artis, daughter of George Marion Lucas & Anna Louisa (Taylor) Lucas. Mother to Gladys M. Taulman, Edna Edell Brooks, Alta Adeline Artis, Willard Melvin Artis, George Russell Artis, Denver Wayne Artis, Forest Edward Artis, Samuel Daton Artis, Lance Everett Artis, Koert Clifford Artis, Frances Benjamin Artis, Herman J.D. Artis, & Ernest William Artis.

Succumbs at Local Hospital After 7-Week Illness

Rites Friday.

Mrs. William Artis, 56, of Clifford, mother of nine living children, two of them in the Army, died at 2:10 a. m. today in Bartholomew county hospital after a 7-week illness.

Mrs. Artis was the mother of four residents of Clifford and three residents of Columbus.

She had been in the hospital for a little less than two weeks and death was attributed to heart failure and gall stones.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon in Clifford Methodist church, of which she was a member. The Rev. John Ford will be in charge.

The body was taken to Norman funeral home at Hope and will be moved to the family residence Thursday morning, where the casket will be open until time of services.

Mrs. Artis was born in Brown county, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Lucas. She married Mr. Artis in 1905 and in 1916 they moved to Clifford.

Survivors beside the husband include the following children: Willard, Lance and Russell Artis of Clifford; William, at home; Mrs. Fred Brooks, Mrs. Homer Taulman and Forrest Artis, all of Columbus; and Samuel and Koert Artis, who are stationed at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, Calif., with the Coast artillery. Four children preceded Mrs. Artis in death.

The soldier sons returned home Monday night because of Mrs. Artis' condition. They will go back to the fort within a few days.
