MUNCIE--Evelyn M. Cartwright, 88, of Muncie, died early Thursday morning at Ball Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born Jan. 13, 1914, in Muncie the daughter of William and Sue M. Persinger Love, graduated from Muncie Central High School and Indiana Business College, and worked for several years as a secretary at Ball Brothers. She married Fred A. Cartwright in 1942, who had co-founded Carmen's Drive Inn of South Madison Street in 1934.
Upon the death of her husband in 1952, Mrs. Cartwright co-managed Carmen's Drive Inn with her brother-in-law, Harry Cartwright, until the restaurant closed in 1978. Her retirement years brought many warm remembrances and appreciations of good food and friendly service from the many patrons and employees of Carmen's Drive Inn.
Mrs. Cartwright was a member of Industry United Methodist Church for many years and more recently a member of Mayfield Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving are two sons, William A. (Bill) Cartwright and Stephen R. Cartwright (wife: Betsy), both of Muncie; five grandchildren; a sister, Lois Garret, Florissant, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Rosella Cartwright, Muncie; several nieces and nephews; and her companion of many years, Herschel I. Mark, Muncie.
Preceding her in death besides her parents, husband and brother-in-law, was her sister, Faye Penrod.
Services will be in The Meeks Mortuary Chapel at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with Pastor Kevin Tharp officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary from 5 until 7 p.m. today or 1 hour before services on Saturday.
