Bonna Louise Baffer, 79, passed away on June 10, 2012 after an illness following surgery. She was born August 23, 1932, in Tiffin, Ohio, to the late John and Bertha Loudenslager.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Norman Baffer; and five children, Bonnie Baffer and husband, Darren DeForge of Yorktown, Barbara Baffer and husband, Daniel Schwed of Frisco, TX, Rear Admiral Bruce Baffer and wife, Perfecta of Washington D.C., Ben Baffer and wife, Kathy of Delray Beach, Florida, and Betty Baffer and husband, Dr. Todd Averett of Williamsburg. Sixteen grandchildren also survive. Other survivors include sister, Linda Richards of Winter Haven, Florida, and sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Tom Prickett of Leesburg, Florida. Brother-in-law Stewart Baffer and wife, Pat of Mentor, Ohio, also survive.
Bonna taught elementary school for 30 years, both in Ohio and Virginia. She retired in 1997 from Newport News public schools after 25 years as a classroom teacher and reading consultant.
Bonna was a lifetime scholar. She received her Bachelors degree from Heidelberg College, a Masters degree from Case Western Reserve University and an Advanced Certificate in Education from William and Mary. Well into her fifties, she completed all coursework for her doctorate at William and Mary. She also served on the adjunct faculty of Christopher Newport University.
In retirement, she was an avid reader in her Williamsburg book club and served as a volunteer tour guide at the Thomas Everard House in Colonial Williamsburg. Bonna was a longtime member of Denbigh Presbyterian Church, enjoyed gardening, and was very active in the lives of her children and grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Nelsen Funeral home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188 on Tuesday, June 12 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A service will be held on Wednesday, June 13 at 11 AM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Williamsburg Memorial Park.
