Accused Murderer Sent To Whitfield

Hinds County authorities transported Miss Mary Elizabeth Saunders to the state hospital at Whitfield Friday afternoon after she was charged earlier in the day with murder in the death of her elderly landlady.

Dist. Attorney Bill Waller said Miss Saunders, 36, would undergo mental examinations and the findings would be presented to the Grand Jury at the July session.

Officers charged she killed Mrs. Laurence Ledbetter Longinotti, 77, of 803 Carlisle, when the elderly woman tried to stop her suicide attempt early Thursday.

Neighbors, concerned over Mrs. Longinotti's welfare, broke into her home Thursday afternoon and discovered Miss Saunders on her hands and knees bleeding badly from slashed wrists.

She was taken to Baptist Hospital where Det. Sgts. Fred Freeman and J. M. Shepherd questioned her Friday morning.

Saunders said she "hurt" Mrs. Longinotti when her landlady attempted to talk her out of committing suicide in the bathroom which separated the bedrooms in which each resided.

Sheriff J. R. Gilfoy carried Miss Saunders to the state hospital at 2 p.m. Friday after Circuit Judge Leon Hendrick signed papers at noon.

Miss Saunders, who had been employed as a secretary at a local real estate firm until early February, was described as being despondent in recent weeks over an illness and personal problems and had been under care of a psychiatrist.

Funeral services for Mrs. Longinotti will be held Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home with the Rev. Christoph Keller Jr., Rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will be in Cedarlawn Cemetery.

She had asked that flowers not be sent to her funeral.

There were no living survivors.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Bell, E. Ray Tillman, George Dehmer, George Williams, W. T. Swales, and Harry Watson.
