Robert "Bob" William Long, age 89, passed away January 11, 2013 at Worthington Christian Village Health Care Center. Bob was an extremely devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was born August 2, 1923. Bob was a graduate of Hilliard High School; a 50+ year member of Columbia Heights United Methodist Church; a 50+ year member of N.A.L.C Buckeye Branch 78; a 32 year and retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service; former mayor (1948-49) for the Village of New Rome; and a veteran of WWII, serving with the 8th Army Air Force, 367th Bomber Squadron, as an engineer and top gunner on a B17 flying fortress. Bob's plane was shot down over German occupied France during his 5th bombing mission and he spent the next 15 months as a POW in Germany. Bob was preceded in death by parents Oscar and Nellie Longerbone, older brother Orville, loving wife, of 60 years, Joan L. (Giehl), and son Larry L. Survived by son, Robert "Bobby" (Deena); daughter-in-law, Vilma; grandchildren, Yvonne, Anthony and Brandon; great-grandchildren, Josh and Emma; and many nieces and nephews. Family members wish to express appreciation to Bob's many friends and staff members at Dublin Retirement Village. Special gratitude and appreciation are extended to the staff of Odyssey Hospice Care, Emerald Crossings Assisted Living Facility (Dublin) and Worthington Christian Village Health Care for the loving and caring attention provided to Bob. The family will receive friends 4-7 PM Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the SCHOEDINGER HILLTOP CHAPEL, 3030 W. Broad St., Columbus where funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Monday. Interment Sunset Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Odyssey Hospice, 540 Officenter Place #100, Gahanna, OH 43230 or the Ohio Alzheimer's Association.
