Bertha (Berwin) Bernheim Loewenstein, born on 6 September 1860 in Louisiana, the daughter of Prussian immigrants Manheim Berwin and Mathilda (Bernstein) Berwin, died on 19 October 1924 at a Houston, Texas, hospital. Her parents; her first husband, Morris Bernheim, whom she married on 21 February 1881 at the home of her sister, Anna (Berwin) Kaiser, in Rockdale, Milam County, Texas; and an unnamed infant grandson, son of J. B. and Minnie Bernheim, preceded her in death. Her second husband, Joseph Loewenstein, "of the Sam Houston Hotel," whom she married on 17 February 1924 in Bexar County, Texas; a son, James Berwin Bernheim (San Antonio); a daughter, Rosalind Lucille (Bernheim) Bleyer (New York City); a grandson, Robert B. Bleyer (New York); and a granddaughter, Vivian Bernheim (San Antonio), survived her.
Services were held on Tuesday, 21 October 1924, from 501 West Evergreen Street in San Antonio, Texas, with Rabbi Frisch officiating. Interment, under the direction of Porter Loring, followed at Temple Beth-El Cemetery in San Antonio, where Mrs. Loewenstein's first husband had been buried three years earlier.
