Nelle Richards was born October 10, 1911 in Republic, Washington and passed away December 18, 2006 at her home in Long Beach.
She graduated from high school in Chicago and attended Purdue University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She moved to Long Beach in 1935 as the bride of Carroll Franklin Loder and became involved as a volunteer in the community.
She served as President of the Junior Charity League from 1946-1947 and the Junior League of Long Beach from 1947-1948 and was deeply involved with the Children's Dental Health Clinic. Nelle was widowed in 1947 and became a working mother to support her two children. She worked for the Community Volunteer Office and in 1948 became Executive Director of the Long Beach Day Nursery.
From 1956-57 she served as President of The Association of Nursery Education. She retired from the Nursery in 1964 to marry Edmund Francis Richards. They resided in Long Beach and then moved to Rancho Bernardo, CA and Maui, HI.
When Edmund passed away in 1978, she returned to Long Beach to be near her family. She always had a special place in her heart for her second home in Maui.
Nelle was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Alma Newton and her brother, William Newton.
She is survived by her son, Bruce Loder; daughter, Nancy Smith (Preston); granddaughters, Courtney Cueva (Javier), Stacy Sniezak (Joseph) and Sharlyn Malone (Robert); step-granddaughters, Cheryl Bauermeister and Lori Bienkowski; great-grandchildren, Callan Cueva, Kylie Malone, Brenner Malone and Hannah Bienkowski; her nieces and nephews; and, her loving companion Russel Hoshaw.
According to her wishes, there will be no public services.
