BERNARD L. "BERNIE" LOAR [Frederick]
— FREDERICK — Bernard L. "Bernie" Loar, 65, of Frederick, formerly of Cumberland, died Monday, May 14, 2012.
Born in Cumberland, on Nov. 26, 1946, he was the son of the late Bernard and Lora May (Sturtz) Loar.
He was a graduate of Mount Savage High School, class of 1964. He graduated from Frostburg State University where he received his Bachelor and MBA degrees. A veteran of the United States Air Force, Bernie was a 28 year employee of the Kelly Springfield Tire Company. Bernie was the former President of the Allegany County Commissioners. He was also the proprietor of the Crusin' Café in Downtown Cumberland. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, St. Timothy Catholic Church in Walkersville, member of the Knights of Columbus, Cumberland Council 586. He had served as Grand Night for the local Chapter and District Deputy for the State. Bernie was a member of Wamba Caravan 89 Order of Alhambra; he was past Grand Commander of the chapter. An author, Bernie wrote a book, "Honor Always" which was published by Vantage press in New York. Bernie was a substitute school teacher who worked for the Frederick County School System. Bernie loved sports; he was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Bernie is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan F. (Meade) Loar; one son, Scott C. Loar, Frederick; one daughter, Angela (Loar) Stitcher and husband Jason, Frederick; three grandchildren, Samuel P. Stitcher, Kylie J. Stitcher, and Abigale M. Stitcher; brothers, Robert Loar, Georgia and William Loar, California; two sisters, Linda Case, West Virgnia and Lorie White of California; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifh.com) on Saturday from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with Fr. Gregory Chervenak, O.F.M. Cap. officiating. Members of the Wamba Caravan 89 Order of Alhambra will also be conducting a memorial service.
Inurnment will be held at Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone, at a later date.
