Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pierz for veteran Pierz businessman Lawrence Litke, 71, who died suddenly Wednesday while fishing on Sullivan Lake.

Mr. Litke originated and operated the Gamble Store in Pierz for more than 40 years, before selling it in 1967 to his son, Arvin. He also operated the Massey-Ferguson Implement and Machinery until 1969, when he sold that business to Eddie Gangl and Ronald Fyten.

Mr. Litke was born in Morrill on Oct. 23, 1903, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Litke. He was married to Evelyn Gau on May 9, 1932, in St. Joseph's Church in Pierz. He started the Gamble store operation in 1933, and ran it for 44 years before selling it to his son. With the implement shop, he also handled AMF snowmobile business. He was recently honored with a 40-year service award from Gambles for his service to the firm and to the community of Pierz.

Mr. Litke also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, an usher at St. Joseph's Church, and a member of bowling teams for St. Mary's Villa and Thielen Appliance of Pierz.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; seven sons, Arvin, Ronnie and Jake, all of Pierz, Ray of St. Cloud, Elmer and Larry of Minneapolis, and Melvin of Coon Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. Wilfred (Diane) Schirmer of Pierz and Mrs. Spencer (Geralyn) Sawyer of Moorhead; three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Kinzer of Pierz, Mrs. Paul (Deloris) Mitchell of Little Falls, and Mrs. Theresa Gau of San Antonio, Fla.; and 24 grandchildren.

Funeral services for Lawrence Litke will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church in Pierz, with the Rev. Alfred Heltemes officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. The Brenny Funeral Home of Pierz is in charge of arrangements.

The Christian Mothers will recite the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with Parish Prayer services at 8:45 p.m. The Knights of Columbus and the ushers of St. Joseph's Church will jointly recite the Office of the Dead at 9:15 Friday.
