Captain Alonzo Lindsey was born on June 12, 1841 in Lawrenceburg, Lawrence County, Tennessee, the son of Edward Newton Lindsey (1810–1844) and Salina (Bailey) Lindsey (1820–1886). [Alonzo's grandfather Lindsey fought under Andrew Jackson in the Creek Indian War (1813-1814), and his great-grandfather Lindsey served in the Continental Army as a Colonel during the Revolutionary War.]
Alonzo was educated at private schools in Lawrenceburg, at Jackson Academy, Burritt College in Spencer and at Franklin College in Nashville. Davidson County, Tennessee.
Just prior to the outbreak of the War between the States, he entered into an association with a Nashville firm, and when the war began he returned to Lawrenceburg and helped organize a regiment which became the 3rd Tennessee Regiment in the Confederate Army.
Alonzo served throughout the war in that regiment, first as a Lieutenant and later as a company Captain. He was taken prisoner at Fort Donelson and confined for 8 months at Camp Chase and Johnson's Island at Sandusky, Ohio. He was later paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on May 1, 1865.
Returning to Nashville, he entered the cotton business and not long after that he went into the wholesale grocery brokerage business for most of his life. However, before his death, he was also an insurance agent.
He married Ethelinda Jane "Etha" Hagan (1847–1924) on October 27, 1870 in Lawrence County, the daughter of John Allan Hagan Jr (1811–1868) and Mary Ann (Bumpas) Hagan (1817–1909).
Living at 1105 Glenwood Avenue, Nashville, Alonzo was 90 years old and a widower when he passed away at home on February 14, 1932. Burial was the next day in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Some of the above information was initially obtained from his Death Certificate, with Daniel A Lindsey of 1115 Glenwood Avenue as the informant. However, that relating to his education and Civil War service was from a memorial in Confederate Veteran, Volume XV page 147, provided by Find A Grave Member BigFrench 46554304 in March 2017.
