Jim was born April 15, 1912, near Hawley in Jones County, Texas in his home by the Clearfork, to the late Alvie Oscar and Lena Jane Lewis. It was in the Clearfork of the Brazos where he spent time fishing with his brother and childhood friend, Archie Jefferies.

Jim and Babe later owned and operated a service station and garage in Hawley for many years. They attended the Church of Christ in Hawley and later were longtime members of the Woodlawn Church of Christ in Abilene.

In April of 1993, he married Elva Graham of Clyde. They spent happy times traveling to California, Branson and throughout Texas.
