Alpha Hart was born 2 Jan 1894 in Midway, Boone Co., Mo to William Stout Hart & Anna Julia McQuitty. She was a direct descendent of John Hart, who had signed the Declaration of Independence.

An active member of the First Baptist Church for 70 years & taught Sunday school for 30 years.

She attended Midway Country School, took High School Courses at Stephens College, in 1912 graduated from Hickman High and later the Univ. of Mo.

Alpha began her teaching career in Boone County in 1914 at Hickory Grove, later that year, while teaching in Nashville, Boone Co, Mo., she met Aubrey Watson Lewis. She married Aubrey 1 June 1916 and became a Farmer's wife.

Alpha resumed her teaching career in 1920 and continued to teach in many Boone County Rural schools until 1943.

She was elected Superintendent of Boone Co. Country Schools. She served two terms and was the first and only woman elected to this position.

She was assistant Librarian & Study Hall Teacher & an assistant Counselor at Stephens College from 1960-1970.

In 1976 she was named "Woman Of The Year" by Delta Gamma & the Professional Chapter of Women in Communications.

The Columbia,Mo. Board of Education named its newest Elementary School, "Alpha Hart Lewis", in her memory.

Alpha belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, MSTA, NEA, Tuesday Club, Exec. Board of Boone Co. Red Cross, Delta Kappa Gamma & Pi Lambda Theta.

"I have always cared for children & books", she once said.

Alpha and Aubrey did not have children of their own, but both were loved and adored by thousands of children, in addition to her Family, including numerous Nieces & Nephews.
