Aaron was graduated from Washington College (later called Washington & Jefferson College) in Washington, PA in 1836. He was graduated from seminary in 1839, and ordained to Presbyterian ministry in 1841 by the Presbytery of Des Moines (Iowa). He was pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Kossouth, Iowa (1841-46); then the Columbus City and Crawfordsville Presbyterian congregations in Iowa (1848-52), after which he did Home Missions work in Iowa from 1852 to 1856. Beginning in 1857 he served Congregational Churches in New Jersey and elsewhere.
