GOOSE CREEK, S.C. - The family of Edith Ferne Eckert, 87, of Goose Creek, S.C., formerly of Kerrville, regret to announce her death on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, following an extended illness. She was the widow of Clifford H. Eckert, who preceded her in death in 2002.
Her memorial service in Kerrville will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Zion Lutheran Church, with Pastor Will Biggot officiating. Inurnment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Kerrville.
In Goose Creek, family and friends gathered from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Eckert Hellstrom, for a celebration of her life.
Arrangements were made through McAlister-Smith Funeral Home in Goose Creek, S.C.
Mrs. Eckert was born in Kerrville, Texas, on March 16, 1920, daughter of the late Gerd and Lena Banta Leinweber. A graduate of Tivy High School in 1938, she was retired from the federal civil service as a purchasing and contract manager, having last served at the Department of the Navy in Charleston, S.C. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, past president of the Kerr County Republican Women's Club, a former member of Kerr County Historical Commission and the Hill Country Preservation Society.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Eckert Hellstrom of Goose Creek, S.C.; and her granddaughters, Dana Leigh Hellstrom of Denver, Colo., and Katie Ann Rotage Eckert of San Antonio. In addition, she is survived by four sisters, Peggy Whitworth of Junction, Texas, Anna Bess Davis of Pasadena, Texas, Gerdy Bluemel and her husband, Sid, of Center Point, Texas, and Joann Taylor and her husband, Wilber, of Kerrville; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Lucy Rotage; sisters, Frances Wehmeyer and Faye Dickey; and a brother, Bobby Leinweber.
