John Leidy was born in Pontiac, Michigan and moved permanently to Ann Arbor when his father took a position teaching in the Law School at the University of Michigan in 1926. He attended Ann Arbor's public schools and Asheville School (NC). He received his BA at the University of Michigan and continued his studies in Michigan's business school. He served as a lieutenant in the US Army in WWII from 1942-1945, part of that time in the Pacific, stationed in Oro Bay, New Guinea. Following the war, John worked in the sales department of the Ann Arbor printing firm Edwards Brothers. In 1951 he and his wife began the John Leidy Shop, a gift store in Ann Arbor that John owned and managed until his death.
