Lois Lee, 84 of Pierre, died Wednesday, April 17 at Avera Maryhouse Nursing Care Center. Services will be 10:00am, Friday, April 19 at Isburg Funeral Chapel with Father Kristopher Cowles officiating. Burial will be 2:30pm, MDT Friday at Black Hills National Cemetery
Lois Guthmiller was born September 2, 1928 to Helen and Jacob Guthmiller at Fairfax, SD. They moved to Burke, SD, when she was 10 years old, and she graduated from Burke High School in 1946. She then attended South Dakota State College where she met and married Glen Lee of Estelline, SD in the fall of 1947.
Glen continued college another year and they then moved to Minneapolis where Glen attended Northwestern College of Chiropractic and Lois worked at the Dayton Company in the correspondence bureau.
They moved to Pierre after Glen's graduation and he opened his office on the 2nd floor of the Pierre Street Block.
It was a terrible winter with heavy snow almost every day, their son, Thomas, was born on December 15 of 1951 and they endured the last flood in the spring of 1952. They had to leave their apartment in the Locke Hotel, and Lois and Tom went to Estelline until the water went down. That summer, the government made it possible for them to purchase their first home—it came in on a big truck—pretty lean, no frills, but they were grateful.
Glen's practice grew and so did their family. Mary was born in September of 1954 and Susan in 1959. Soon after that they built a new home at 123 E. Elizabeth where Steven was born.
After all their children were in school, Lois went to work in Glen's office where she worked until Glen's retirement in 1997.
Lois loved gardening and her little rose garden. One of her most enjoyable activities was being on the river with Glen and the family. She cherished every moment with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her life was filled with music. She played in the City Band and was a member of the American Legion Kilties. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and they VFW Auxiliary for over 60 years.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Glen, her parents; two brothers: Earl and Bill Guthmiller and sister Carol Hutchison. She was survived by her sister Clarke (Gayle) Hoover of Sioux Falls and brother Jerry Hutchison of Burke. Lois was the grateful mother of Tom (Ellen) Lee, Sue (Loren) Schaefer, and Steve (Halley) Lee, all of Pierre, and Mary Lee of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
