Alan Arthur Lear, 66 of Damariscotta, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2015, at home in the arms of his beloved wife and son. He was born August 16, 1949, in Bangor, the son of Arthur M. and Jane (Avery) Lear.
Alan grew up in Holden and graduated in 1967 from Brewer High School, having met his future wife, Cynthia M. Parsons, the year before. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-1972, spending six months aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Alan and Cynthia married in Orrington on March 15, 1969, and spent the next 46 years happily together. She was Alan's main source of love, and he was Cynthia's rock, as they shared their amazing journey. Their only child, Alex Alan Lear, was born in 1978, and the three of them remained a tight family unit, brought only closer by Alan's courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Alan was predeceased by his parents, but leaves behind his wife, Cynthia; son, Alex and daughter-in-law Lauren of North Yarmouth, grandpuppy Walter and puppy Willow; his sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Paul Cust of Fort Myers, Florida; brother and sister-in-law, David and Melissa Lear of Holden; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Norman and Angela Dirksen of Augusta; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Michael and Mary Ellen Voisine of Brewer; niece and nephew-in-law, Melissa and Bill Hixon of Augusta; nephew, Paul Cust Jr. and girlfriend Kim; nephews and nieces-in-law, Stephen and Nu Dirksen of Manchester and Bill and Anju Voisine of Ashburn, Virginia; and nephew, Josh Lear; several grand-nieces and nephews; and special cousin, Harland Young Jr. and wife Carol. Alan also had a special friend, Kurt Soneson, and favorite doctor, Minda Gold.
Known for being fair, doing right by people and doing the right thing, Alan was a hands-on, no-nonsense man who served as a Marine Patrol Officer for 22 years. During that time, he performed CPR on a 6-year-old girl who had been caught underwater in Camden Harbor for several minutes after a boat she was riding with her brother and grandfather had capsized. For his role in saving her life and the others, Alan was named Officer of the Year in 1997 by the North East Conservation Law Enforcement Chiefs and was recognized across the state of Maine for his efforts.
A commercial diver, an aviator, an artist, a sailor, a singer, a social worker, a husband, a father, a friend -- Alan humbly applied his many attributes to enhancing numerous lives. His dry sense of humor made him a hit among family and friends alike.
A time of visitation will be held at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street in Damariscotta, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 1st. A celebration of Alan’s life will begin at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home. A reception will follow the service, at the Damariscotta River Grill, 155 Main Street in Damariscotta.
