Katherine Elizabeth Baker - Savannah -To her family and friends, Katherine Baker will always be known as "Hon." Mother Baker, who was called home on June 26, 2006 by her Savior, loved her family more than anything else in this world. She made many sacrifices for her children throughout her 86 years on earth, understanding that a mother's love is a lifetime commitment. She was born April 1, 1920 in Clyo, Ga., to the late Mr. James and Mrs. Janie Lawton. She attended public schools in Chatham County, Ga. She married Willie Baker, Sr., who preceded her to the final rest in 1973. From this union came six children, including the late Eugene Baker. Mother Baker retired from the Chatham County school system and was also a senior companion who worked with disabled elderly. Her faith in her Savior was the most important part of Mother Baker's life. She was a longtime member of True Word of Yahweh Yahshua Assembly in Savannah. She often shared the wisdom that she gained from personal experiences with her loved ones, which was always appreciated and will be sorely missed. One of the experiences that she often talked about was growing up during the Great Depression and how that helped shape her life. Those who will forever miss her are her sons Willie Baker, Jr.; Isaac Baker; Isaiah Baker; and Joseph Baker; all of Savannah; a daughter, Bernice Wynn of Hephzibah, Ga.; a sister, Birdie Mae Lawton of Baltimore, Md.; a brother Isaiah Lawton of Savannah; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand- and great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. today at Oak Grove Cemetery, with Elder Walter Stewart officiating.
