Hazel G. Drake, 96, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at Spooner Health System.
She was born on June 21, 1913, in Rice Lake to Joseph and Caroline (Coon) LaVeau.
She grew up on a farm east of Sarona and attended the Sarona Grade School. She graduated from Rice Lake High School and attended Teachers’ Training in Spooner. Hazel taught at the rural LaFayette School in the town of Madge in Washburn County for four years.
She married Ralph Drake on August 18, 1936, and they farmed in West Sarona for 37 years until Ralph’s death on June 2, 1973. She then moved to Spooner. The last five years she was in Spooner Health System Nursing Home.
She is survived by one daughter, Norma (Gary) LaVeau, of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; one son, Rev. E. LeRoy (Dorene) Drake, of Trego; six grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Victor, Clifford and John.
The funeral was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Spooner Wesleyan Church. Pastor Ron Gormong officiated.
Interment was in Sarona Cemetery.
Pall bearers were Jeffrey Drake, Jerry Drake, Paul Vreugdenhil, Kevin Roe, Brent Mitchell and Ed Anderson.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Skinner Funeral Home of Shell Lake.
