Larry attended many schools in the US and overseas during his father's military career, graduating from high school in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He entered the United States Army on July 23, 1970, attending helicopter maintenance school in Fort Eustis, Virginia. Larry served during the Vietnam War from June 17, 1971, to April 18, 1973, as a crew chief on helicopters. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge, Air Medal, Overseas Bar, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He married Connie Neeley on May 14, 1988 in Hope Mills, North Carolina. Larry enjoyed fishing, swimming, skating, and working with computers.
