Alex J. Lang, 88, Hays, died Monday, April 16, 2007, at Hays Medical Center. He was born Aug. 3, 1918, in Sterling, Colo., to Mike A. and Emma (Leikam) Lang.

He married Elizabeth (Betty) Sander on May 17, 1949, in Hays.

He retired from the military in 1960. He worked for the Hays Police Department and later retired from the Ellis County Sheriff's Office. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and St. Joseph Catholic Church, both of Hays.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Mark A. Lang, Edmond, Okla.; a daughter, Victoria Degenhardt, Hays; two brothers, Virgil Lang, Kansas City, Mo., and Mike Lang, California; six sisters, Irene Staab, Hays, Edna Critchfield, Hill City, Erma Silkman, Goodland, Mary Jane Sowers, St. John, Mo., Ida Groff, Phoenix, and Patricia Riat, Topeka; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, with graveside military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, both at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine. A parish vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Ellis County Cancer Council in care of the funeral home.
