Fairfield Recorder - Jan 15, 1897 edition

Death of J. E. Lake
John E. Lake of Ward Prairie, Commissioner of Precinct #1 died last Tuesday night, Jan. 13, 1897 of Bright's disease. Mr. Lake had been sick but a few days and his death was a great shock to his friends, many of whom had not heard of his illness.

Deceased was born in South Carolina about 53 years ago. He was living in Arkansas when the Civil War began and though quite young he entered the service of the South and served faithfully til the end of the struggle, making a good soldier. He came to Texas a short while after the war and has resided in Freestone county about 30 years. His remains were interred in the Lake Chapel cemetery on Ward Prairie on Wednesday evening, Rev. F. O. Favre officiating. He leaves a wife and six children, three of whom are married.

Mr. Lake was one of Freestone county's best citizens being an industrious and intelligent farmer, he has prospered; being plain, straight forward and honest, he had many friends. Truly he was a good man. He, probably, was not the member of any church, but if "the pure in heart shall see God", surely he rests well.

The Recorder extends sympathy to the bereaved family and hopes that sometime in the silent eve after their scattered joys may be reunited, where the weight of sorrow is never felt, and the shadows of parting never fall.
