Roy Lambert Krueger, Jr., 78, of Keokuk, passed away quietly on Monday, May 25, 2009, at River Hills in Keokuk.

Roy, or "Bob" as he was known to family and friends was born on June 29, 1930 in Keokuk, Iowa to Roy Sr. and Ruth M. Krueger. He was the second of five children.

Bob attended Keokuk public schools and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Accounting. He entered the Army in 1953 during the Korean War, and spent one year in Japan, where he was assigned to an accounting office. The Japanese culture fascinated him. He spent as much time as possible sight-seeing, which included a trek up Mt. Fuji with the crowds of locals and tourist.

After his discharge from the Army, he made his permanent home in Keokuk, taking a job with the Hubinger Company. His corn-buying skills earned him a trip to Russia during the Communist era. He recounted the atmosphere of discouragement among the people. Bob left the Hubinger Company after ownership changed, and eventually joined his brother, Henry at Krueger Brokerage.

Bob married Marion Robertson Courtney on December 1, 1969, and the couple spent 37 years together till her passing in 2006.

Bob loved to fish, and was an avid duck hunter. Later in life his attention turned toward gardening. He grew exotic plants in his greenhouse, and supplied his family and neighbors with luscious tomatoes and other vegetables from his backyard garden. His active life was shortened by a recurrence of cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Bob is survived by one brother Henry Krueger and his wife Frances; one sister, Martha Acer and her husband John; two step sons, Roger Courtney and his wife Rhonda; Ron Courtney and his wife Mary Lou; five step grandchildren, Matthew Courtney, Amy Courtney & Hillary Kluthe and her husband Justin; David Courtney & Andrew Courtney; fourteen nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marion and by two sisters, Sally Dains and Diane Hughes.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2009 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Emmanuel Dass officiating. Burial followed with fully military rites at Keokuk National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family would like memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Alzheimer's Association, or American Cancer Society.
