Edna Mae Askelson, of Waterman, Ill., passed away at home on May 12, 2011.
She was born on Feb. 13, 1917, in Pittsburg, Pa., the daughter of Michael and Pauline Kohler. She worked for Malone's Department Store in DeKalb for many years, and later helped establish and operate Honey Hill Orchard in Waterman. Grandma Edna was well known at the orchard for her cider donuts. Edna was a long time member of the United Methodist Church of Waterman. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, an avid gardener and a talented artist, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
She is survived by two daughters, Janet (Ray) Hartman of Sarasota, Fla., and Kathy (Steve) Bock of Waterman; five grandchildren, Dave (Marilyn) Hartman of Sarasota, Dan (Stacy) Hartman of Indianapolis, Ind., Lindsay (Berk) Boehne of Shabbona, Stephanie (Nate) Lamoreux of Lanark, Ill., and Brittany Bock of Waterman; seven great-grandchildren, Derek and Kendall Hartman, Jordan and Tyler Hartman, Avery and Madison Boehne and Lleyton Lamoreux; one sister, Katherine Ogle; two brothers, Jay Kohler and Donald (Betty) Kohler; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronald Askelson; three brothers, Max, Frank and John Kohler; and two sisters, Lillian Seppala and Alice Larson.
Friends and family can call from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at the United Methodist Church of Waterman. A private family burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established in her name to benefit several local charities. The Cremation Society of Illinois, 630-820-2828, assisted the family with arrangements. Published in Daily Chronicle from May 17 to May 22, 2011
