Eunice lived with her husband Louis Barnett on Barnett Avenue in McKinleyville, California. They settled in McKinleyville during a time when neighbors were close by, but not too close! Their old neighborhood has many more homes in it now, and the short avenue which bears their surname still exists.

Prior to her marriage to Louis Elbert Barnett, Eunice's maiden surname was Knight. The 1920 Census below shows three children: Wilma Knight, Herschel Knight and Darrel Knight. After Eunice's marriage to Louis Elbert Barnett, Louis adopted Darrel Knight, who then became Darrel Barnett. Hershel Knight married at a young age and in 1940 he and his wife Lucille were residing in the same town in Missouri as the Barnett family. Herschel and Lucille Knight followed the Barnett family when they moved to California some time after 1940. Presumably the daughter of Helen Knight, Wilma Knight's whereabouts after the 1920 Census (shown below) are unknown; likewise for the whereabouts of Helen Knight.

John H. Maxville (sometimes spelled 'Maxvill,' according to his Find A Grave memorial # 29957944) was Eunice's step-father, but his second wife Susan's birthplace of Tennessee does not match with Eunice's mother Susan's birthplace of Missouri which was given to census enumerators. However, the 1900 Census record below shows Susan A. Knight (maiden name Susan A. Regan/Ragain/Reagan -- the surname has several spelling variants, with some family members taking the spelling of 'Ragain,' while others used the spelling of 'Reagan.'), born in Tennessee and married to James A. Knight, with their daughter Helen Knight, all in the household of James's parents, James H. Knight and Mary E. Knight. The below census records show several confirmations that Susan A. Knight was indeed the birth mother of both daughters Helen Knight and Eunice Knight. At the date the 1900 Census was taken, Susan and James had been married for two years and Susan had given birth to one child (Helen) with one living (Helen). Since Eunice was born October 18, 1900, Susan would have been pregnant with Eunice at the date of that census. The 1900 Census shows Eunice's paternal grandparents James and Mary Knight and four of eight of Eunice's aunts and uncles, who were all very important people in Eunice's family tree; therefore, a census page showing individual details for each household member listed in the 1900 Census is below. James A. Knight, Eunice's father, died in August of 1901, just over a year after Eunice was born.

The woven tapestry of Eunice's family is quite complex. These records detail the movements of her family members, with short descriptions of how records apply to the weaving.

Here is Eunice's mother, Susan Ragain/Reagan, when she was enumerated in her first census at about the age of 4-years-old and in the household with her father, 'W. B. Ragains,' farmer, and her mother 'Ellen Ragains.' Note that their two children, Nancy Reagan and Alfred Reagan (who appear above in the 1870 Census record), are no longer listed and presumed to be yet living but now married or otherwise having left the household. Note twins Thomas and Rachel are again listed. Since Eunice's sister Amanda was 3-years-old and born in Tennessee and her sister Adaline was 0-years-old and born in Missouri, this would indicate that the family had moved from Tennessee to Missouri between 1877 and 1880.

Since Eunice Knight's birth date was October 18, 1900, that means that at the date this census was taken Susan would have been pregnant with Eunice. Helen and Eunice Knight are both step-daughters of John Maxville in this next census record; their mother Susan had been previously married to James Knight. It is likely that children Martha, Lydia, Jessie and Moses Maxville were John's children from his first marriage to Martha Maxville (these individuals are listed as having been the children of John and Martha, as stated on John Henry 'Maxvill's' Find A Grave memorial # 29957944). They were quite the blended family! With so many ladies in the household though, I have to wonder whether John, Jessie and Moses visited their own mancave outhouse -- fellas only -- with a separate little backyard trail!

This is a very interesting and revealing census record. It shows that 'Unice Night' (Eunice Knight is correct) is 19-years-old, single, and living in the household of her step-father John H. Maxville and his wife Susan Maxville (this enumerator had some trouble with the spelling of names, sex, and family relationships/roles, so corrections are shown inside the [ ] brackets). Since May F. Maxville is the sister of Eunice in the 1930 Census below, the 'Unice Night' in this census record is the same individual as Eunice Knight, and 'Hurshel Night' is Eunice's child, since he is shown later in the household of Louis and Eunice Barnett in the 1930 Census below. 'Wilma Night' (Wilma Knight is correct) was most probably the daughter of Helen. The relationship of 'Hellen Night' to Eunice is that they were sisters with the surname of Knight from their mother Susan's previous marriage to James Knight. Susan A. Maxville was the second wife of John H. Maxville (Martha was his first wife, as shown in the 1880 Census record above).

Ten years later in this 1930 Census, Wilma Knight would have been around 14-years-old, but she is not enumerated with Hershel Knight and Darrel Knight and their mother, Eunice Knight (now Eunice Barnett). It is probable that Wilma was the daughter of Helen Knight and they are residing elsewhere, or that Wilma may have already married and taken up residence elsewhere with her own husband. May Maxel (May Maxville is correct), Eunice's half-sister, is also living in the household of Louis Elbert Barnett and Eunice Barnett.

Eunice is resting in peace beside her husband Louis Elbert Barnett, surrounded by other family members also interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Arcata, California. Her life's story is akin to a complex puzzle, with her many relatives and friends being the pieces which fit together to create a beautiful lifetime mosaic.

James Knight is listed below with his wife Susan Knight and their daughter Helen Knight. Since Eunice Knight's birth date was October 18, 1900, that means that at the date this census was taken Susan would have been pregnant with Eunice. Susan is found in later census records with her husband John H. Maxville, several of John's children from a previous marriage, and Susan's daughters, Helen Knight and Eunice Knight. One page is shown for each household individual; note each person's birth place as well as the birth places of their father and mother.

Eunice was already married to Louis Barnett in 1930, and Nolan Barnett was born about one year after the 1930 Census, so Nolan is the child of Louis and Eunice Barnett.

By the time of the 1940 Census, Herschel Knight was already 21-years-old, married to Lucille, and living in Cedar Gap, Wright County, Missouri. His current and previous residences match as close locations with the household of Louis Elbert Barnett and Eunice Barnett in the 1940 Census above, so it appears as though he remained in close proximity to the Barnett family of his mother, step-father, brother and half-brother. Herschel and Lucille Knight followed the Barnett family when they moved to California some time after 1940, and an infant daughter of theirs, Bonnie Irine Knight, Find A Grave memorial # 76000054, is also interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Arcata, California.
