Pioneer of Spokane Passes Away at Sanatorium—-Lived Here 30 Years.
After an illness of two years, Mrs. Abbie Elizabeth Klein, Spokane pioneer, died at the Williams Sanitorium, West 803 Fairview Ave., at 8:15 this morning.
Born in Merrimack, New Hampshire, 71 years ago, she moved with her parents to Aurora, Illinois, in 1874 where her father, the Rev. Stephen Thompson Allen, erected the First Episcopal Church in that city.
In 1876 she married Eugene Klein and came west in the fall of 1884, settling at Murray, Idaho, where Mr. Klein engaged in [the] mining and merchandise business. Her life in Murray was devoted to uplift [others] and [in] charity work. She organized the first Sunday school there, and was known throughout the district for her devotion to the care of the sick and needy.
Mr. and Mrs. Klein moved to Spokane in October, 1889. For two years, Mrs. Klein was a leader in the north side, Christian Science Church.
The deceased is survived by two sons, E. Vaughn Kline of the Spokane of Eastern Trust Company; A. Chase Klein of Clark Brothers & Klein; a daughter, Mrs. J. W. Wimer, Wallace, Idaho; three brothers, H. R. Allen, Wallace; Theodore S. Allen, Minneapolis; W. W. Hitchcox, Aurora, Illinois, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Lamson, Aurora, Illinois.
The funeral will be held from Smith and Company's at 3 o'clock Thursday and interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
