NEW HILL - Carl Lester King, 80, of Country Haven Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Western Wake Medical Center, Cary.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998, at Balfour Baptist Church, Asheboro, conducted by the Rev. Gary Mullis and the Rev. Gerald Hart. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

Mr. King was a native of Stokes County and worked at Acme-McCrary Hosiery and he later became Clerk of Superior Court in Randolph County. After serving as Clerk of Court, he operated a Nationwide Insurance Agency in Randleman until retirement. He was a member of New Hill Baptist Church in New Hill and he was instrumental in starting Forest Park and Cedar Grove Baptist Churches in Randolph County and two Baptist churches in Pa. He was a member of the Friendly Four Gospel Quartet, which was wellknown for their radio program on WGWR for more than 30 years. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry in France and Germany. He was in the Battle of the Buldge and helped reach paratroopers in Holland. He received 3 Battle Stars and a Purple Heart.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Frances R. King of the home; daughter, Carol King Thomas of New Hill; sons, William L. "Bill" King of New Hill; Roger M. King of New Hill; Rev. Carl L. "C.L." King of Wilmington; Gaylon E. King of Raleigh; sisters, Juanita Moody of Asheboro; Geneva Burkhardt of Asheboro; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Ridge Funeral Home, 908 Albemarle Rd., Asheboro, NC.

Memorial contributions may be made to New Hill Baptist Church, Old US Hwy 1, New Hill, NC 27562; Cedar Grove Baptist Church, 3012 Old NC Hwy 49, Asheboro, NC 27203; or Forest Park Baptist Church, 132 Gum St., Randleman, NC 27317.
