Prudence King, who died at age 25, was the wife of Joseph King. Her exceptionally wide sandstone stele is probably the work of noted carver David Jefferies. Mrs. King was evidently a beauty, so much so that her epitaph makes mention of the fact--an unusual concession in a still-Puritanical era. Women, especially matrons, were expected to be modest, and commenting on their physical appeal would have been considered sinful in some quarters. She evidently had a lovely singing voice as well. Her epitaph reads:
"Beauty & ... with Virtue Joind (sic)
Did grace the Body here confind (sic)
Weep not kind reader but Rejoice
That heaven's heard her tunefull voice..."
