Following graduation Alex enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He served in the upper peninsula of Michigan, fighting forest fires on Isle Royale in Lake Superior until his discharge in October 1937. Alex worked in construction and was a lifeguard at Ramsey Memorial Park. He was drafted in 1942, but was denied for medical reasons.
Following the draft, he was recruited to work in a shipyard in Tacoma, WA, where he worked until December 1943. He began working for Globe Ship Builders in Superior in 1944. Alex and Violet "Vi" Nelson were married in November 1944. After the eclosing of Globe Shipyard in 1945, Alex worked at Roth Brothers Department Store in the maintenance until the store's closing in 1978. He then worked for Campbell Lumber Company from 1978 until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet in November 1970; a daughter, Gloria Wipfli in 2005; five brothers and three sisters; and two sons-in-law, Lowell aHoff and Kenneth Wipfli.
Alex is survived by June Smith; his two daughters, Joan Hoff of St Charles, MN and Virginia Johnson of Brookfield, WI; seven grandchildren, Scott (Barb) Wipfli of Wausau, Sue Koberle of Verona, WI, Mark Wipfli of Anchorage, AK, Juliene Wolf of Ft Myers, FL, Lori (Gary) Nelson of Alden, MN, Tim (Jenny) Hoff of St Charles, MN and Gary (Sue) Hoff of Rushford, MN; 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Lucy Kerecman of Los angeles, CA; many nieces and nephews; also good friends, ted and Lucy Smith and Bill and Rosalie Jones.
Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.
