JESSIE JOHNSON
Passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 3, 2010. She was 87 years old. She was born July 26, 1922 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Jessie (McGowan) and Moses Kahalewai. She lived her early years with her sisters on the Big Island at Punaluu in Ka'u as her father was Wharf Master for Hutchinson Sugar Mill at Honuapo Wharf. She then moved to Honolulu where she attended Roosevelt High School. After graduationduring the war, she worked at the US Immigration Station in Kakaako with her sister Margaret. It was here that she met Norman Johnson, a local soldier on the army staff. They married and started their family, living for many years in the family home in Manoa. Pilali was a devoted homemaker for her family and well-known hostess.

After the two oldest children went away to the mainland to college, Norman and Pilali and their youngest daughter, June, moved to the Big Island as Norman's career continued with C. Brewer at various locations, including Volcano and Naalehu, in Ka'u near where she had grown up. They eventually built a beautiful home for their retirement on the Volcano Golf Course, where they spent many happy times, entertaining and spending time with their many friends and family. After Norman's passing in 1991, Pilali moved into her own apartment next to her daughter's family in Kailua. She loved being involved in her grandchildren's activities in school. She was also an avid golfer and continued to enjoy her various ladies' golf clubs and many golf trips to the mainland. She still loved a good party and was famous for throwing her OWN birthday party every year, full of good food, music and laughter!

She is survived by her 3 children: Carolyn (Ron)Tapper of Napa, California; Bill (Wendy) Johnson of Honolulu and June (Paul) Cleghorn of Kailua, Hawaii and her grandchildren: Bryan and Andy (Lauren) Tapper, Lesley and Gary Johnson, and Jessie and Libby Cleghorn. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Lou Gomard of Kailua, Hawaii and Hazel Jane Peterson of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sistersMargaret Horner, Mona Cheshire and Lillian Holcomb.
She spent the last 2 years at Kina'ole Estates Residential Care Facility in Kailua. We are thankful for the wonderful care she received there by the staff.
