Maiden name has been given as: Jonson, Johanson, Eliason and Nelson with "Matilda Jonson Johnson" given as full name on death certificate with son Hjelmer as informant.
Elias and Mathilda Johnson
Elias Johnson was born in Sweden in 1860, and came to Dakota Territory in 1882 with several other settlers. He homesteaded in Kidder Township some years later.

Mr. Johnson farmed and raised horses. He also was one of the men who built the church in New Sweden [Swedish Lutheran Mission Church, 3 miles northwest of Holmquist, Day, South Dakota].

He married Mathilda Eliason about 1890. Eleven sons and daughters were born to them: Anna, Mrs. Julius Nelson, Chicago, deceased; Ida, Mrs. Julius Alsager, Minneapolis; Arthur, Hot Springs, a World War I veteran; Hjelmar, who married Edith Mitchel, Sioux Falls, deceased; Hary, of Gilman, Wisconsin, deceased; Gotfred and Reuben of Webster; Minnie, Mrs. Verne Wallace, Chicago, deceased; Joseph, who married Sylvia Donat, Webster; Lillian, Mrs. Clarence Locken, Los Angeles; and Pauline, Mrs. Bill Wahrbeim, Chicago, Illinois.
