Juanita Inez Jones Brasher, 91, of Memphis, TN, passed away on January 22, 2013.
She was a resident of Baptist Trinity Hospice, at the time of her death.
Juanita was born in Memphis, TN, on January 12, 1922. Her mother's family was from the Brownsville and Stanton, TN area and her great grandmother was a Cherokee Indian who was part of the Indian removal from North Carolina and East, Tennessee.
She went to Rozelle Elementary, lived with an aunt in the Florida Keys for a few years, returned to Memphis where she briefly attended Messick High School, and graduated from Southside High School in 1940. She attended the old Memphis School of Commerce and went to work at Goldsmith's Department Store in downtown Memphis as a comptometer operator; she was married to Rex L. Brasher, Sr. in 1942 at McDill Army Air Force base in Florida just prior to his departure for England and WWII. She and her husband helped establish Colonial Baptist Church in 1952-53. She also was a bookkeeper for several years for her husband's photography business in addition to raising three children.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Inez Morton Jones; her father, Edward Jones; her brothers, Joe E. Jones, Paul Joseph Jones and sisters, Louise Young, Esther Jennings, Margaret Eastman, and Ruth Curd; and by her husband of 70 years who died September 23, 2012. She leaves 3 children, Rex L. Brasher, Jr. (Marilyn) of Memphis, Tennessee; David R. Brasher of Columbia, Maryland; Cheryl E. Lester of Cushing, Oklahoma; two granddaughters, April Burtnick of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, and Peggy Hudkins of Jenks, Oklahoma; and 5 great grandchildren.
The family also wishes to thank her caregiver, Debbie; her good friends, Jim and Paula Harris; and all of the extremely helpful and compassionate staff of Baptist Trinity Hospice.
The funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2013 at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
The visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
