Gary Lee Johnson was born on April 4, 1955, in Halifax County, and was the youngest child of Frances Johnson and the late Earlie L. Johnson Sr. He transitioned from this earthly life during the early morning hours on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at Louisburg Nursing Center in Louisburg, after a long valiant fight with cancer.
During his early life, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, was baptized, and joined Fidelity Baptist Church in the Summit Community where he grew up. After relocating to Raleigh, he attended Wake Chapel Baptist Church.
His formal education was received in the public school system of Halifax County, where he graduated from Northwest Halifax High School in Littleton with the class of 1973. After attending Shaw University in Raleigh, he became employed as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant with the former Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, and remained until his retirement with 30 years of dedicated service.
Some of Gary’s favorite things in life were listening to music, reading, fishing, cooking, watching westerns and courtroom dramas, and spending time with his family and true friends. He developed a deep interest in African artifacts and was a true flea market picker. His independent, meticulous personality was evidenced in the way he dressed, expressed his strong will, and the demand to have everything according to HIS order.
Those left with precious memories of his life are his son, Jamiel Antwoine Leach, and his grandson, Sa’Quon Monte’ Moore, both of Raleigh; his mother, Frances Johnson of Littleton; his siblings, Marie J. Robinson (Sam) and Carolyn J. Cheek (Jerry) of Littleton, Eddie M. Johnson (Omega) of Newport News, Va., Earlie L. Johnson Sr. (Sandra) of Greensboro and James Baker of Roanoke Rapids; his maternal aunts and uncle, Mary A. Margerum (Mel) of Roanoke Rapids and Dorothy Powell and Fred Johnson (Agnes), all of Littleton; his paternal aunts and uncles, Barbara Jones (Garnsey), Mable Johnson and Henry Peters, all of Roanoke Rapids, James Johnson (Ann) and Harvey Peters (Barbara), all of Littleton; his great-aunt, Elberta Snow of Littleton; his loyal, caring cousins and friends, Larry Snow, Andre’ Peters, Robert Rainey, Andre’ Phipps, Michael Boyd, Winfred Jefferies and Mildred Tyler; his very special friend, Jackie King; seven nieces, three nephews, one great-niece, four great-nephews, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends who will all miss his earthly presence.
The body will repose from noon to 8:30 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 5 at Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, which is handling the arrangements.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 in the chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. Leon Abbott delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Fidelity Baptist Church Cemetery, 627 Summit Road, Littleton.
