Matilda, oldest child of the late Thomas and Margaret Hooks Johnson, was born in China Grove, Pike County Sept. 14, 1871. She moved with her parents to Enterprise, where her mother now lives. She was married to E.B. Hataway, Dec. 12, 1890. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. She moved to Covington County Dec. 21st, 1903 and enter St. Margaret's Hospital June 20th, 1916. She was operated for a tumor and during five weeks she was operated four times all by Dr. J.H. Blue, none being successful. She died on July 25th and remains shipped on the following and interred at Bethany, Covington County, July 27th.

Funeral services were conducted by Elder H.J. Wilson who spoke words of cheer and comfort to the bereaved.

She leaves a devoted husband, a dear mother, four sisters and three brothers to mourn her death.

Her mother was Ms. Margaret Johnson, two brothers, Luther and Willie Johnson, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Johnson, Mrs. Mattie Floyd, Mrs. Gertrude Reeves, all in Pike County, Al. One brother, J.F. Johnson and one sister, Mrs. Viola Harris, who live in Covington County.

She leaves a host of friends in Pike and Covington County. She lived a Christian life and was a true wife and daughter and sister. Her husband wishes to thank the good relatives and friends who wrote such words of cheer and consolation to them while in St. Margaret's hospital which both enjoyed together there.
