Wife of Elmer Bert Estelle, Jr.

From the News Review:

Elizabeth Mae Johnson was born September 22, 1916, in the family home on Boomer Hill to Fred C. and Eliza Mae Starks Johnson. She was the sixth child in the family. Two of the children died very young in Michigan but she grew up with brother, Perle and sisters, Madge and Marion.

Her parents came by train from Michigan to Oregon in 1904. After living for a short time in Elgin, North Bend, Roseburg and Myrtle Creek, Oregon, they finally settled on Boomer Hill.

Mae attended elementary school at Boomer Hill Country School and high school in Myrtle Creek.

Growing up, Mae kept busy helping her parents at their mill, taking care of the animals they had, and earning money for school clothes by picking fruit.

She and Elmer Estelle dated for about a year and were married October 26, 1934, at the Douglas County Courthouse. The only time they have been separated in 76 years of marriage was when Elmer served his country in WWII. He spent his time overseas in Ceylon, now known as Sri Lanka.

Over the years Mae worked at Mercy Hospital and Horns Super Cream Store. Then she worked for many years as a receptionist for Dr. Alan Munroe, Dr. Jess Hutson, Dr. Gerald Casebolt, Dr. Young, and Dr. Donahue. She retired from Dr. Donahue's office in 1981.

One of her more interesting extra jobs was from 1945-1951 working as an observer for the United States Air Force looking for bomber planes. She observed from a place by Benson Hill School off Diamond Lake Blvd. The threat of being attacked by Russia was the issue.

Mae was a member of the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist Church and she and Elmer were very involved in the development of that facility. Though they had no children of their own they cared for, encouraged and supported many young people so they could obtain a Christian education.

They lived on their place in Melrose until the last few years when Mae's health was such that they needed more care and they moved to the Garden Valley Retirement Center.

Mae passed to her rest on Thursday, November 4, 2010, and now is sleeping until Jesus comes. She leaves her husband of 76 years Elmer Estelle of Roseburg, Oregon, and a sister-in-law, Irma Osborne of Willetts, California. There are many young people from over the years that have been blessed by knowing Mae and Elmer and consider them family who will also feel the loss.

A special thank you to all the caring staff at Garden Valley Retirement Center, and especially to Saunja Tuttle and her caregivers.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested in memory of Mae that gift donations be contributed to a Maranatha One-Day Church building in Ongole, India. Maranatha requests that the donations be sent to the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist Church at 1109 Garden Valley Blvd, Roseburg, Oregon, 97471 and mark the gift "Maranatha One-Day Church".

Services will be held for Mae on Sunday, December 5, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Seventh-day Adventist Church at 1109 Garden Valley Blvd., Roseburg.
