My Great-Grandfather. He came from Sweden by himself at just 20 years old. Like many Swedes before him, he was headed for the rich farmland of Wisconsin and Minnesota. He hit a bump in the road in Bluestone, Ohio where he met my Great-Grandmother, Anna Kurten. She, too, had recently come from the old country with her father. They married in Bluestone and had their first two children, Hildur and Alfonse there before moving on to their final destination just outside the little village of Haugen, Wisconsin.

On their farm on Devil's Lake they raised 13 children, burying 4 of them before their own deaths in 1949 just 3 months apart. I'm sure they would concur with Jimmy Buffet's synopsis of life. "Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way."
