Thelma Garrett, 91, of Madisonville passed away Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at her home.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at First Baptist Church in Madisonville. Bro. Vaughn Tatum and Bro. Troy Brooks will officiate, and the burial will follow in the Madisonville City Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday prior to the funeral at First Baptist Church.

Thelma Pearl (Jinkins) Garrett was born Dec. 29, 1918, in Nacogdoches to James Patrick and Ellie Pearl (Hurst) Jinkins. She married Hubert Ross Garrett on December 15, 1941, and worked by his side with the youth in our community for many years as Ross served as The Madison County Extension Agent.

Thelma graduated from Stephen F. Austin University and retired as a teacher with The Madisonville Consolidated Independent School District. She was an accomplished painter and travelled each year to Kerrville with her friends to learn more about her interest in artwork. Thelma loved being a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and a great-great-grandmother and was always collecting items of interest for her grandchildren. She was a member of Daughters of The American Revolution, Daughters of The Republic of Texas, United Daughters of The Confederacy, Eastern Star, The Retired Teachers Association, U.S. Daughter of 1812 and First Baptist Church of Madisonville.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Mamie Baggett, Liddie Dee Mangum, Odessa Nesom and Virginia Jinkins; brother George Jinkins; grandson Mitchell Denton; and aunt Roxie Walters.

Survivors include her husband, Ross Garrett; children Sharon Standley, Sylvia Dean and husband Dale, Edmon Garrett and wife Judy, and David Garrett and wife Catherine Loraine; grandchildren Kristi Standley, Sam Standley, Courtney West and husband Keith, Casey Dean and wife Lauri, Leah Wilson and husband Clint, Leslie Broesche, Jason Garrett, Ryan Garrett and wife Linda, Lisa Garrett, Blake Garrett and wife Betty, Anthony Garrett, Adrienne Garrett and Madison Garrett; great-grandchildren Andrew Denton, Dean West, Ellie West, Ty Dean, Cody Wilson, Keegan Wilson, Dalton Broesche, Connor Broesche, Claire Broesche, Izabella Garrett, Alyssa Garrett, Ashley Garrett, Aubrey Garrett, Brooke McCarty, Tyler McCarty and Briana Garrett; great-great-grandson Mitchell Denton II; and niece Elizabeth Jenkins.

Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons Sam Standley, Jason Garrett, Blake Garrett, Casey Dean, Anthony Garrett and Ryan Garrett.
