Son of Theodore Ebenezer Jewell and Eliza Jane Mitchell, husband of Jennie Garbutt, whom he married in 1872, and father of Theodore Edson, Florence Genevieve, Marguerite, and Elmer Garbutt Jewell.

Husband of Mrs. Lida Moore Archer, whom he married on October 22, 1890 in Montclair, Essex, New York, and father of Laura Jewell.

A summer resident of Bay Shore, owner of the sloop "Squaw", and a member of the Olympic Club and the Penatquit Corinthian Yacht Club of Bay Shore.

In 1880, Herbert Jewell, aged 35, was living at 441 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, with his wife, Jennie Jewell, aged 37, and children, Theodore Jewell, aged 7, Margarett Jewell, aged 4, and Elmer Jewell, aged 2. He was shown to be a flour merchant.

Obituary - Jewell - Suddenly on Friday, October 1, Herbert Stuart, beloved husband of Lida Jewell, in his 76th year. Funeral services will be held at the Lefferts Place Chapel, 86 Lefferts Place, near Grand Ave., Brooklyn, on Monday, October 4, at 8 p.m.

(*Note - "The Jewell Milling Company was a large, waterfront flour mill that ground grain into flour and livestock feed before loading it directly onto waiting boats. Co-founded by Theodore Jewell in 1855, the company endured many incidents in its time. The six-story mill burned down twice in the early 1860s and suffered a boiler explosion in 1881. One report estimated that at the height of its operations, the mill ground 1,000 barrels of flour and 75,000 pounds of feed every day, and that the company's dock elevator handled 2.5 million bushels of grain each year.")
