(Frances) Eloise Jarnagin was born October 18, 1917 in Clinton Township, Sac County, Iowa, the second of three daughters born to Frank and Alta (Canady) Irwin. Her family attended a country church, the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, where Eloise's mother taught Sunday school. Eloise went to a country school through eighth grade and then graduated from Sac City High in 1935, and took normal school training before becoming a country school teacher. On July 17, 1937, she married Max Jarnagin in Fort Dodge, Iowa. They lived on a farm between Rockwell City and Lohrville, IA until moving to Sac City in 1946.
In the 1950ís Eloise worked as a nurseís aide at the Van Horn Nursing Home. She then worked for Empress Stationery. Eloise raised beautiful roses, crocheted blankets, worked crossword puzzles and loved the Christmas holidays and a good winter blizzard. She also liked to watch Hawkeye basketball. She and Max looked forward to spending annual vacations with their family in northern Minnesota throughout the 1980ís, and after he retired, they took several road trips to the southern and western U.S. Eloise belonged to the First Christian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a kind and humble woman, but had a strong spirit, as evidenced by her ability to obtain a driverís license at age seventy, when Maxís health was declining.
Eloise died of congestive heart failure on January 12, 1998, at her home in Sac City.. She was survived by three children: JoAnn (Tom) Underberg of Carroll; Nancy (Owen) Johnson of Green River, Wyoming and James (Susan) Jarnagin of Mason City; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Ruth and George Kolbe, Lake View and Lois and Kermit Chapman, Sac City. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Max.
