Mary Ann was the daughter of George and Christina Strauss Jacoby, born in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. She joined brother John and sister Elizabeth, and perhaps other siblings unknown to me.

Mary Ann was married three times

1. To Phillip Fenstermacher with whom she had 4 children, including twins Willoughby and Benneville:

--Willoughby Fenstermaker: 16 Sep 1842 - 9 Feb 1890
--Benneville J Fenstermaker: 16 Sep 1842 - 1 May 1913
--Sarah Ann Fenstermacher Nehs: 28 Sep 1844 - 29 Jan 1909
--Ellen Jane Fenstermacher Rickard: 31 Dec 1848 - 14 Feb 1919

2. To Mr. Hiskey: this marriage took place between 1850 and 1860 as she is in the 1850 Census as Mary Fenstermaker and the 1860 Census as Mary Hiskey. But a search for a "Mr. Hiskey in this era, including newspapers (all in German) did not yield anything helpful (as of early June 2017).

3. To Thomas Berkenstock, "of Saucon" on 4 June 1864 at the Salem United Church of Christ. In this record Thomas' surname is spelled Bergenstock. Mary is documented as Mary Hiskey "of Macungie".

As for other aspects of Mary's life:

I was fortunate to clearly find Mary in the 1850 Census. She is living in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County with her parents, George and Christina Jacoby and 3 of her 4 children (ages 2, 5, and 7; Benneville is not listed).

In the 1860 Census, Mary is in Upper Saucon Township, Lehigh County. She is recorded as Mary Hiskey, age 40, working as a servant, likely to Catharine Egner, age 80, listed first on the Census page. Living with them is Ellen Hiskey, age 12, the correct age to be Ellen Jane Fenstermacher, Mary's youngest child.

In the 1870 and 1880 Census', Mary is found living with husband Thomas Berkenstock in Upper Saucon Township where Thomas is farming. Thomas' son by his first wife, James (b 1857), is living with them.

Thomas died in 1890 and was buried in St. John's Lutheran and Reformed Church Cemetery in Emmaus, Upper Saucon Township, where Mary would later join him.

Until Mary's death, the only other record I've located for her is an entry in the 1894 Allentown, PA City Directory. She is listed as "widow of Thomas", boarding at "5th between Broad and Railroad", apparently in Allentown.

According to the fairly extensive obituary which ran in The Allentown Leader on 1 August 1898 (first page), Mary had been ill with "dropsy" (now called edema I believe) for over a year and about 2 months before her death was brought to the home of her youngest daughter, Ellen Miller, so she could be cared for.

Mary died on 30 July 1891 at age 77 years, 9 months, and 6 days. Her funeral was held the following day at St. John's Reformed Church, Emmaus, where she was interred alongside her husband, Thomas Berkenstock.

Along with her obituary, Mary's Will provided more confirmation of family relationships. She left her personal belongings to youngest daughter Ellen and then directed that her financial holdings be divided equally between her 2 daughters (Ellen and Sarah). Mary specifically denied any inheritance to son Benneville, the reason unknown. Son Willoughby had predeceased her.

It has been very satisfying to find Mary's obituary and Will, with all the detail they provide, to tie at least most of her family together. My interest in Mary stems from her youngest daughter, Ellen, who was the mother of Harry F Gangewere, the first husband of my Grandfather's oldest sister, Cornelia (Kunigunde) Schmitt.
