Considered one of the best fielding shortstops of his era, he had a career .952 fielding percentage. He led National League shortstops in assists four times, total chances three times and fielding percentage twice. He appeared in four World Series, helping the Giants win in 1933. In 1934 he made the All-Star team. He was a career .291 hitter with 1,768 hits in 1,656 games. He hit 135 home runs and drove in 929 runs. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 by the Veterans Committee.
